The USCCA Certified Basic Handgun Course and the Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL) Courses are joined together to provide a comprehensive hybrid course that focuses on not only basic handgun safety, but proper handgun usage.
**This course meets and exceeds the Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL) Course requirements**
In this four-hour (4) block of instruction, you will learn Maryland State firearm law, home firearm safety, handgun mechanisms, parts, and operation. The applicant must also demonstrate the ability to safely operate and fire a handgun.
The other half of this hybrid course is the four (4) hour Basic Handgun block of instruction which is the comprehensive USCCA Certified Basic Handgun course that focuses on the use of the handgun as a tool for self-defense.
Self Defense Firearms Basics
Safety, Understanding Semi-Automatics, Understanding Revolvers, Understanding Modern Striker-Fired Handguns, Gun and Ammo Malfunctions and how to deal with them, Selecting a Handgun, Ammunition and other Use of Force Options.
Defensive Shooting Fundamentals
Defensive shooting versus Marksmanship, Grip, Shooting Platform, Aligning the Muzzle to Target, Point Shooting, Unsighted/Sighted Fire, Flash Sight Picture, Trigger Control
Gear and Gadgets
Flashlights, Holster types and Holster retention, Equipment Belts, Weapon Mounted Lights, Lasers, and Firearms Storage
Basic and Advanced Skills
Creating a Training Program, Dry Firing, Drills
Maryland Firearms Law
Purchase & Transfer, Carry or Transport, Possessing a Carry Permit, Home Safety, Safety Devices
Live Fire Exercise

Maryland HQL Training Certificate
The Firearms Safety Training Course will be instructed by a Qualified Handgun Instructor, and shall consist of a minimum of 4 hours of instruction and include the following minimum curricula:
State Firearm Law. Overview of the State firearm laws, including discussion of what constitutes a regulated firearm, how to properly purchase or transfer a firearm, where allowed to carry or transport a firearm, when necessary to possess a carry permit, who is prohibited from possessing firearms, and state law relating to minors, permissible levels of force, and use of deadly force.
Home Firearm Safety. Overview of handgun and firearm safety in the home, including discussion of access to minors, locking and storing of firearms, and use of safety devices, such as secure lock boxes.
Handgun Mechanisms and Operation. Overview of the proper operation and safe handling of a handgun, including cleaning and maintenance, the loading and unloading of ammunition, and the differences between revolvers and semi-automatic handguns.
Operation and Handling Demonstration. Orientation component that demonstrates the person’s safe operation and handling of a firearm, to include a “live fire” component in which the applicant safely shoots the weapon.
